Tourism of Algeria

Mostly when people are asked what they know  about Algeria, one word pops up namely sand. Once arrived, we realised why; 85% consists of sand! Logical that it isn’t that attractive and suitable for tourists. However, it’s worth a visit and since it was on our route we spend the last four days in this biggest country of Africa.

We had to be very careful what we did because Algeria isn’t the safest country to visit. Fortunately, we survived!

Here it’s all about sand so we were curious to visit the Sahara, the biggest desert in the world. Besides that, there is a beautiful place Bou-Saâda, meaning ‘happy city’. We saw an oasis of palms, camels and sand-dunes. We wandered through the old streets, visited a lot of mosques and bought some souvenirs.

As we like wandering through old, beautiful streets we also visited Timgad. This is a Roman colonial city where you can admire Roman antiquities and ruins, just as forums (or fora), baths, theaters and basilicas. We saw some rock drawings from 5000 to 1200 BC, which were very impressing. This city is part of the World Heritage list of the UNESCO since 1982.

The third day, we decided to visit the capital of Algiers which is located in the north of the country. We saw the Bey-palace, the museum of Modern Art, the Kashba and the Notre Dame d’ Africa. The street view looks very French so when we walked the promenade, we thought a moment we were in Marseille.

To end our trip in Algeria, we passed a day at the beach. Not too many people know but this country has no less than 1200 kilometres coastline! There are beautiful beaches and a turquoise, warm water sea. What a relaxation for us! We also made a boat trip and saw wonderful panoramas.

Although, there isn’t that much to visit in this country, we have enjoyed our days here.

You can watch this YouTube film to have an idea what we saw the last days: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3f9jTO-XQw

  2. Algeria, not attractive and suitable for tourists? I do not agree with that! OK, if you don't like a walk for hours in a bloody hot desert, then it is not attractive. But I think everyone should do this once in his/her life. And this country has the biggest desert in the world, so definitely worth visiting Algeria!

  3. I liked the desert! Our tour with our dromedaries was amazing. Before, I've never been on a dromedary. It was very hot, with the result I'm now very burned. A happiness we had, we had to wear a type of scarf on our heads. But frankly, I'd rather sit on a horse.
