It is
hard to find some good information about the politics in Sicily. When you think
about the political situation of Sicily, I think ‘Mafia’ is something that
crossed almost everybody’s mind, isn’t it?
But I would not go in on that part
and just give you some general information that is interesting to know if you
visit this country.
The Politics of Sicily, Italy takes place in a presidential representative democracy. The
President of Regional Government is also head of the government, and of a
multi-party system. The Regional
Government work out the executive power. The leaders of the legislative power are both the government and the Sicilian Regional Assembly. The current President since 2012 is Rosario
Crocetta.
- He was born on 8 February 1951 in Gela
- He is an Italian politician and current President of Sicily
- Something that makes him a little bit special, is the fact that he was the first openly gay mayor in Italy when he became mayor of Gela in 2003
- He is also a spectacular figure in the fight against Mafia
- He was elected as member of the European Parliament in 2009
Furthermore,
Sicily is a clamp of the Christian Democracy since World War II, while in Italy
we have a Communist Party. After decomposition of these parties, the region was
ruled by a coalition under Berlusconi Silvio party ‘Forza Italia’ who is
center-right and the Christian-conservative party ‘Union of Christian and
Centre Democrats’ under President Salvatore Cuffaro.
During
the elections, Sicily always gives center-rights results. But because of the
communists and their successors never have won in the region since 2012, Sicily
now is ruled by a center-left coalition between the Democratic Party and the
center-party Union of Christian and Centre Democrats.
